The Night We Were Chased

This happened in December of last year in Mexico. My family and I(24) usually go to Mexico in December for the holidays. This time was very exciting because my older sister(27) was going(usually busy with work) and so was our uncle who was going to meet us there. Our uncle is one of those uncles who doesn’t give a shit. He is outgoing, risk-taker and although he is an older guy, he still acts like a teenager.Well that night, my sister and I were disappointed that we didn’t do anything interesting that whole day. Our mother told us we were going to explore “el alto” earlier with my her, my grandmother, other cousins, but we didn’t end up going so I left to my other grandmother’s house.(Both of my grandmothers live in the same town). “El alto” is where my mom grew up before they moved to the town my grandmother lives now. It’s basically a lot of land that has a old broken down house/ruins and a shit ton of vegetation and is located outside of town, surrounded by fields. It’s roughly a 10 min drive on a curvy dirt road to get there. Before, I go further let me give you quick background of where my parents are from. These past couple years, the state has been plagued with violence caused by CJNG. There has been killings throughout the whole region especially since they have been fighting another cartel. The town where my parents are from and the areas nearby has seen its deal of killings and disappearance of robbers and people involved with illicit activities. For one it’s more calm, since there was a shit ton of robberies and little gangsters before CJNG came in, but still. A fucked up situation all around. Not to mention, supposedly the plaza bosses for the area live in a little town some 10 mins away. You can see the lights of the town at night in the distance. So that night, I go back to my grandmother’s house to pick up my sister and mom, but I stay a while. My sister still annoyed, brings up the idea that we should go to “el alto” and see if it’s haunted. My mom has told us on numerous occasions she had witness paranormal activity there when she was younger. Of course my uncle(mom’s brother)says yes. I hesitate, but then agree and we go.It’s 11pm and there we go driving in my grandmother’s old Explorer. My sister sitting shotgun, my uncle driving and me in the backseat eating some chips. We get to “El Alto” and hang out there for a bit. It’s pitch black. My uncle begins talking about the shit that has happened in town in the past few months. How a commando drove into town one early morning, broke down the gate of an alleged rival’s house with a sledgehammer and beat his dad because we wasn’t there. How a drone was seen hovering above that house a couple times after that. How they found a couple of other dead bodies in a cornfield some 5 minutes away from the town. He then tell us how a couple months ago, a couple more minute down the dirt road, the cartel(probably the same people who beat the father) burned a man. They placed tires on him and lit his ass on fire. It was all over the news there. He then asks us if we wanted to see exactly where it happened. I’ve always been a “fuck it. Let’s go do” type of guy, but it was already late and I just had bad feeling about the whole thing. It was sketchy as fuck all around. I hesitate, but we all agree again and go.So we drive a couple minutes down the same dirt road and come to a stop. We turn off the truck, get out and my uncle points to at the direction where it happened. Its a bit more down the road, but we don’t go any further since it was super dark. To make it worse, the dirt road is heavenly covered with carrizos on both sides which made with even more unsettling. We decide just to hang out where we were for a couple minutes in pure darkness. The only lights visible were those from the our town behind us and the cars on the highway going to Guadalajara a couple miles ahead. No noise either just the water passing through the canal right next to use.Suddenly we see a light in a field that was at our 11 o’ clock. Our uncle tells us its just a man making sure the water from the canal is irritating the field properly. A “velador”. We also point out the men that were loading bales of some type on to a semi in the distance past the valedor; down in some type of canyon. We went there(actually a bit closer) a couple days earlier on bikes and were greeted by a valedor(maybe the same or a different one) who knew my uncle, and didn’t think nothing off it.At first, he just shines the light at us once and continues doing his work, but then he begins shining the light at us more frequently. Moving it side to side. At this point we start to get nervous and leave. We are driving for a couple minutes when out of nowhere, from that canyon; a truck with these bright yellow fog lights and a LED bar appears. It looked like a Ram. Its lights were bright ass hell and I mean bright. The “valedor” must had radioed them and told them about us. The truck stays there for some seconds, observing us then out of no where, it begins hauling ass.It doesn’t go around onto the dirt road where we were stopped, but instead crosses right through the fields. I’m sure there was a dirt road there. At this point, my sister and I are fucking scared. “Tio? Is he chasing us?” I say. But it’s soon obvious he is. “Holy Shit! Go! Go! He’s right behind us! Tío!” We both tell our uncle. The truck was still a good distance way, but at that speed it was going, it sure was going close that gap soon. My uncle still sorta laughing starts speeding up. I look back at the truck still behind us at some distance. I knew it was hauling ass because with help of it taillights, I could see all the dust and dirt it was picking up.We were easily going over 50mph on some dirt road that was meant for 20mph max with all the bumps and curves. My sister in the front seat starts yelling and asking if she could get out and just hide down in the canal. Obviously, we just kept going full speed. I’m grabbing onto the door handle firmly. Our hearts beating out of our chest. Adrenaline all through out body. I can definitely say this was my first time I actually feared for my life. “Vergas!” I sayAs we are reached the last curve, we start to calm down, but still in shock. There was a tractor doing some work to our left, but what the fuck was he going to do if shit went down. “Fuck that keep going!” I tell my uncle. We finally enter town and begin to calm down. We slow down, park the truck and just sit outside. Pretending we didn’t just get chased. We buys some garbanzos from the vendor passing by and eat them there to not make it obvious. We wait to see if a truck passes and nothing. We finally get inside and everyone begins asking what happened and we tell them. “You idiots! Those could have been the cartel!” My mother yells at us. My sister and uncle try to make fun of me, and try to down play how scared they were, but we all knew we were all scared. My sister forgetting that he urinated herself a bit. I then drive my mom back to our house. When I get to the house, I tell my dad what happened and he chews me out. He tells me how stupid we were going over there at that time especially with all the shit that was going on and how those who chased us were up to no good. I knew he was right in every aspect especially since he mentioned that although he knew the family that owns the lands, they had done ties with the cartel. I remember not being able to sleep that night. The next morning, I drive my mom back to her mother’s house. My grandmother, sister, uncle and aunt are already there having lunch. We all talk more about what happened. As it turns out, the people who work that field(my parents know the man who owns that land)grow onions and people steal their onions. Us being there at 11pm made them suspicious, which is why they wanted to find out who we were. So apparently it was just normal hardworking people and not cartel. Or that’s what everyone was saying. But I ask myself, what normal hardworking person chases strangers at 70mph just to talk to them? What if they weren’t normal working people? What would have happened if they caught up to us that night? I guess I’ll never know. via /r/NarcoFootage https://ift.tt/35O7q1c
