The time even my super mega extremely Christian mom was flabbergasted by how extreme our church could be.

I was scrolling through Reddit, and I saw a post that, for some reason, reminded me of this memory, though I'm not sure why, and I thought I'd share and see if anybody else had crazy stories like this.So I grew up in a very, VERY sheltered, Christian family. We didn't have cable TV because there were too many sinful shows on, and instead watched good old fashioned PG Christian and Family Value movies (PG-13 was fairly swoon worthy, and if they happened, we were taught to immediately close our eyes when told to as to not see anything bad. And anything rated R? Psh. Might as well be watching porn!). We were only allowed to listen to Christian music, didn't celebrate Halloween, ended up homeschooled because the schools were too 'worldly', Pokemon taught evolution, role playing games were gateways to witchcraft and satanism, and you didn't 'date', you 'courted'. We went to the Focus on the Family headquarters in Colorado Springs for vacation. Y'know, crazy things like that that made perfect sense when you're an obedient, god-fearing child threatened with hell if you left the true path. So, suffice to say, my family was very, VERY Christian. Now, also in our church was one of those uber christian families with a half dozen kids that all had names starting with J and the girls all in dresses and buns, and the boys in black pants and ties. Their dad had passed away when they were pretty young, but the mom still managed to be the perfect Stay At Home mom with the long dresses and braided hair bun, and they never, EVER missed anything Church related. Both services, wednesday church, Bible Study, all that. And one day, we saw all the kids sitting in their normal front pew, but, unusually, their mom wasn't there, and the oldest was holding up a video camera.Turns out, the mom's throat started swelling up and she was having trouble breathing that morning, so her family immediately went into action and did the Right Christian Thing to do. Aka, she drove herself to the nearest hospital, which was about a twenty minute drive away in the next town over, and all of her kids, three of which had driver's licenses, went to church and brought the camera with to film it for her so she wouldn't have to miss the sermon.I remember that as soon as we got in the car after church, my mom turned to me and my siblings and informed us all that there was a new family rule. If anybody ever had a medical emergency, like being unable to fucking breathe (she didn't exactly say the 'F' word, but it was definitely implied with her tone of voice), then helping that family member without question would take precedence over listening to an old white guy behind a wooden pulpit drone on about stuff we've already heard a dozen times (she didn't exactly say that either, but I personally felt like it was implied). The mom ended up being fine in the end, but instead of inspiring others with their level of devotion, like I'm sure they thought they were doing, that family's 'dedication' to the church above everything else was just another item added to my increasingly long list of why these people were kinda crazy and making me wonder why I believed the things I did. via /r/exchristian https://ift.tt/2TrRWdE
